Perplexity Runs on Reddit: 89% of Its Answers Cite It

We ran 100 commercial and GEO queries through Perplexity (Sonar) and logged every citation. Reddit showed up in 89 of 100 answers. Perplexity cites a different web than a publication-first engine does.

If you treat “getting cited by AI” as one goal, this run should stop you. We sent 100 commercial and GEO/SEO queries to Perplexity’s Sonar model and logged every source it cited. One domain showed up in almost every answer.

Reddit was cited in 89 of 100 Perplexity answers. YouTube in 58. The head of Perplexity’s citation surface isn’t publications — it’s user-generated content.

What we measured

100 queries, run through Perplexity (Sonar), every answer’s citations captured verbatim. Every query returned sources — 878 citations in total, 8.8 per answer, resolving to 502 unique domains. The most-cited sources:

  • reddit.com — 89 of 100 queries
  • youtube.com — 58
  • linkedin.com — 21
  • semrush.com — 15
  • developers.google.com — 12

Then a long tail: 82% of the 502 domains appeared for only a single query. But the head is unmistakable — social and UGC platforms (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn), with SEO-tool vendors (Semrush, Ahrefs, G2) close behind.

The shape of Perplexity’s web

Two things stand out against a publication-first engine. Perplexity cites more per answer (8.8) and reaches wider (502 domains across 100 queries). And its concentration is at the top: no single publication dominates, but one platform — Reddit — is nearly ever-present.

Citation width was steady across topics (8.3–9.2 average citations per answer for GEO, software, marketing, technical SEO, e-commerce, and content), so this isn’t a quirk of one subject. Reddit’s dominance held across the board.

Why an engine leans this way

This is inference about the pipeline, not a claim about Perplexity’s internals: a wide-retrieval engine that rewards source diversity and recency will keep surfacing Reddit, because Reddit threads are dense, current, opinion-rich, and heavily indexed — exactly the candidates a diversity-favoring reranker floats to the top. YouTube and LinkedIn follow for the same reason. A model answering from training weights, or one with a shallower retrieval step, produces a very different head.

What it means for GEO

1. “Get cited by AI” is not one target. The domain that wins in Perplexity (Reddit) is not the domain that wins in a publication-first engine. Optimizing for one can leave you invisible in the other.

2. If your buyers ask Perplexity, presence in the conversation may beat the perfect blog post. A genuine, useful Reddit footprint — real answers in the subreddits your buyers read, not astroturf — appears to matter more here than a pristine landing page. (Astroturfing is both against Reddit’s rules and self-defeating; the reranker rewards substance.)

3. Category and comparison pages already sit in the head. Semrush, Ahrefs, and G2 recur because “best X” queries pull comparison content. If you sell software, being on those comparison surfaces is table stakes for this engine.

Honest limits

  • One engine, one basket, one run. Perplexity Sonar, 100 English commercial/GEO queries, a single execution. Perplexity’s answers are non-deterministic; a second run will differ at the margins. We’re standing up month-over-month replication so “Reddit at 89%” can be confirmed as a stable pattern rather than a snapshot.
  • Now a head-to-head. Claude has since run the same 100 queries, and the matched comparison is published: Do two AI engines cite the same web? The overlap is 22% — and the starkest split is this essay’s headline stat: Reddit appears in 89 of Perplexity’s answers and 0 of Claude’s. Claude’s head is the SEO-tool and publisher set (Semrush, Medium, the trades) instead.
  • Reproducible. The raw per-query citations behind every number live in the repo (src/data/panel/raw-latest-perplexity.json).

The number to carry: across 100 queries, Perplexity cited Reddit in 89 of them. Whatever “AI visibility” means for this engine, it runs straight through Reddit.
